Singles Day on 11 November: the world's biggest shopping day and what reaches us

11.11 turns over more than Black Friday and Cyber Monday combined. In Europe it is a forerunner of Black Week — with its own strengths and one clear weakness.

Singles Day on 11 November: the world's biggest shopping day and what reaches us

In 2026 Singles Day falls on Wednesday 11 November — the four ones in the date are the entire origin of the name. Started as a student counterpoint to Valentine's Day, it is today the largest online shopping day in the world by revenue and clearly exceeds Black Friday and Cyber Monday put together.

In Europe, though, it is something different from what it is in Asia: not a standalone event but an early curtain-raiser for Black Week. That is exactly what makes it interesting — and, in one respect, risky.

Why the date works here

11 November falls twelve days before Black Week begins. For retailers it is the last chance to make revenue before price competition levels everything in November. Anyone who did not sell in October and does not want to wait until the end of November discounts now.

That creates a situation you rarely get otherwise: genuine discounts without the attention of Black Friday. Less competition for the same items, fewer sold-out bestsellers, less pressure. In fashion, sportswear, small electronics and household accessories Singles Day is regularly competitive with November — sometimes better, because the shelves are still full.

Where it loses to Black Friday

The weakness is just as clear. Wherever the discount comes from a model change rather than from stock pressure, there is more to be had two weeks later. That covers the classic technology categories: televisions, laptops, headphones, robot vacuums. There Black Friday is the low point of the year, and Singles Day is the run-up to it.

So the practical division looks like this:

  • Buy on 11 November: fashion, shoes, sport, kitchen and household accessories, cosmetics, toys outside the big brands — everything where the price depends on stock levels.
  • Wait until 27 November: big technology, large household appliances, anything with a model year. Buy on the 11th here and you generally pay the price of impatience.

The check that saves the most on this day

Because Singles Day sits so close to Black Week, one question decides every purchase: is this a stock price or a model-change price?

You recognise a stock price by the product having been in the range unchanged for months with a flat prior price. A model-change price shows up as a descending staircase — the price falls in steps and never returns. The second form gets cheaper in November, the first does not necessarily. How to tell the two apart is set out in our guide to reading price history.

For everything you do not buy on 11 November, the simplest possible Black Friday preparation applies: note the price. Two weeks later that gives you a comparison figure no advertising banner can supply.

Placing it in the annual calendar

Singles Day is the third of four big dates in the second half of the year — after the Prime Big Deal Days in October, before Black Friday and Cyber Monday at the end of November. Which date is worth most for which category, and which you can safely skip, is set out in our shopping calendar.
